Mood swingers

You instantly feel giddy and happy no matter how sad and miserable you are whenever you see, feel, hear, taste or experience them. I call them mood swingers because for one, I experience a mood swing into a state of euphoria every time they show up. Here are things that will never fail to lighten up my doldrums.

Cinnamon rolls - Or rather, the smell of freshly baked rolls are a kiss of an angel. A bite of these = just like heaven!

A Beatles song - My spirit instantly goes high when the Fab Four rocks the scene. Just play my favorites: I Want to Hold Your Hand and Come Together or just any of their songs and I’ll surely sing along at the top of my lungs.

Rainy Days - If you know me well then you know how much I hate sunny days and the warm, irritating feeling they make me suffer. So when it starts to cool down, get a little gloomy and the raindrops fall from the clouds above, that calls for a celebration!

Anything free - Food, gifts or something on the house is a thing of joy for a kuripot and matipid person like me. Imagine getting something and not even paying a single centavo, how lucky can I get?

Little acts of kindness - Smiles, a simple “thank you” or just helping me out on class goes a long way. For a world that can be harsh and unfair to everyone, these acts make my life worth living.

Compliments - Sincere words of admiration from people are blessings in disguise for me. They are my instant confidence booster. And it’s always a plus if people say these two magic words: “Pumayat ka!” :)

Corny jokes - I admit it. I am corny. Sometimes people laugh not at my jokes but at the fact that they are so cheesy. So when someone fires a joke at me, no matter how corny it will sound, I will laugh my heart out. And don’t worry if after a month I still laugh at that joke.

Random whatever from a crush - Whether it’s just a millisecond eye-to-eye (that I swear happened), two-word exchanges or accidentally holding my crush’s hand at the elevator, I will be in Cloud 9 for the next three days.

“I Miss You” texts or calls - I have this friend which I have a little “tampo” on because apparently, she’s busy with her love life that she forgot she still has friends. Well she texted me last week and boom! All my ill feelings towards her aregone in a snap and my heart is filled with cheer.

Answered prayers - These are living-proof that there really is some kind of higher entity listening to our prayers and looking over the universe. They are pieces of good fortune sent from above to make our lives worth breathing and fighting for. And I am thankful for that!

Rihanna’s performance at the recently concluded American Idol 11 is just pure perfection! If Jessica Sanchez performed like this I would’ve cheated for her via Skype. But really, I feel like gasping for air every time I watch this breathtaking masterpiece. Bravo!

Date a girl who reads. Date a girl who spends her money on books instead of clothes. She has problems with closet space because she has too many books. Date a girl who has a list of books she wants to read, who has had a library card since she was twelve.

Find a girl who reads. You’ll know that she does because she will always have an unread book in her bag. She’s the one lovingly looking over the shelves in the bookstore, the one who quietly cries out when she finds the book she wants. You see the weird chick sniffing the pages of an old book in a second hand book shop? That’s the reader. They can never resist smelling the pages, especially when they are yellow.

She’s the girl reading while waiting in that coffee shop down the street. If you take a peek at her mug, the non-dairy creamer is floating on top because she’s kind of engrossed already. Lost in a world of the author’s making. Sit down. She might give you a glare, as most girls who read do not like to be interrupted. Ask her if she likes the book.

Buy her another cup of coffee.

Let her know what you really think of Murakami. See if she got through the first chapter of Fellowship. Understand that if she says she understood James Joyce’s Ulysses she’s just saying that to sound intelligent. Ask her if she loves Alice or she would like to be Alice.

It’s easy to date a girl who reads. Give her books for her birthday, for Christmas and for anniversaries. Give her the gift of words, in poetry, in song. Give her Neruda, Pound, Sexton, Cummings. Let her know that you understand that words are love. Understand that she knows the difference between books and reality but by god, she’s going to try to make her life a little like her favorite book. It will never be your fault if she does.

She has to give it a shot somehow.

Lie to her. If she understands syntax, she will understand your need to lie. Behind words are other things: motivation, value, nuance, dialogue. It will not be the end of the world.

Fail her. Because a girl who reads knows that failure always leads up to the climax. Because girls who understand that all things will come to end. That you can always write a sequel. That you can begin again and again and still be the hero. That life is meant to have a villain or two.

Why be frightened of everything that you are not? Girls who read understand that people, like characters, develop. Except in the Twilight series.

If you find a girl who reads, keep her close. When you find her up at 2 AM clutching a book to her chest and weeping, make her a cup of tea and hold her. You may lose her for a couple of hours but she will always come back to you. She’ll talk as if the characters in the book are real, because for a while, they always are.

You will propose on a hot air balloon. Or during a rock concert. Or very casually next time she’s sick. Over Skype.

You will smile so hard you will wonder why your heart hasn’t burst and bled out all over your chest yet. You will write the story of your lives, have kids with strange names and even stranger tastes. She will introduce your children to the Cat in the Hat and Aslan, maybe in the same day. You will walk the winters of your old age together and she will recite Keats under her breath while you shake the snow off your boots.

Date a girl who reads because you deserve it. You deserve a girl who can give you the most colorful life imaginable. If you can only give her monotony, and stale hours and half-baked proposals, then you’re better off alone. If you want the world and the worlds beyond it, date a girl who reads.

Or better yet, date a girl who writes.

How I wish every boy would read this… So they would date me. Hahaha. But really, boys should read this and think about it.

Today is a very special day, not because I just enrolled (and welcomed myself to the most crucial year of a Medical Technology student) but because today my Daddy turns 48.

If you are reading this right now (I know you are), I just want you to know that we miss you as much as you miss us. You are the most hardworking person I know and I am forever grateful for that but please don’t forget to take care of yourself. I’m glad you’ve stopped smoking and I know it’s high time you avoid drinking Tsing Tao, too (Hahaha!). Sorry for all the headaches I’ve given you over the years. Hands down for putting up with me and my hard ways. Although there are certain thing that we’ve argued about (and still do), I am glad that you are my father. I admire you for your selflessness, lively personality (which unfortunately I don’t have) and love for us. I may not be very vocal of how much I love and appreciate all the things you do for me, just know that I appreciate everything with all my heart.

Although the phrase “thank you” will never be enough to repay you for all the things you gave up for us, just the same… Thank you. Thank you for giving me the best of everything. I’m saddened by the fact that you are not here with us to celebrate but I know you’re doing this for us, for our future. I hope you’re happy as much as we are for having you. I love you so much! Oh I almost forgot, happy birthday! And I’ll see you real soon.

TV Shows I Wished I'd Watched

The only television show that I still perpetually watch this days is How I Met Your Mother (Who can ever get away from Barney Stinson’s awesomeness? And I’m sure Ted Mosby is every girl’s dream). I think I’ve outgrown Gossip Girl (the complicated plot of friends banging friends and family controversies is too much for me, although I’ll always love Blair and Chuck) and Glee (which I later on realized focused on depressing social issues). But sometimes there are TV shows I wished I watched when I was younger when I had the time or was basically in high school and not worrying too much about my college life. Although I can still watch them now (thanks to torrent and pirated DVDs), I don’t think I will enjoy them as much as if I’d watched them from way back.

1. Friends

There are only 3 things I know about this show: (a) Every girl wanted Jennifer Aniston’s hair in the past because of this sitcom, (b) they lived in an apartment in Manhattan and (c) the theme song which my Tita Nanette would always sing along to whenever she heard it.

2. Lost

One of my favorite male blogger loves this show so much he still blogs about it until now even if it ended a few years ago. Makes me think about how good this show is whenever I read or see his posts!

3. Grey’s Anatomy

I’ve always wanted to watch this show but whenever I think about how late I am (specifically eight seasons late), I back out and just stick to HIMYM.

4. Monk

Seleena, one of my best friends, would always recount episodes she has watched whenever we ran out of things to talk about back in high school. I was so confident with her mad narration skills that I just did not have the motivation to watch this show.

5. The OC

I was so fascinated with Gossipl Girl in high school that one blogger encouraged me to watch this TV show which according to her I will definitely love because it’s like Gossip Girl minus the complex story line. I was so preoccupied with Blair and Chuck that I didn’t find the time to do so. But I’m still curious about people’s devotion of Seth and Summer’s love story.

This is the only video I have on my phone. And whenever I a. am sad, b. need some cheering up and entertainment or/and c. have nothing to do and by chance I have my phone around, I see to it that I drown myself in pure Joseph Gordon-Levitt awesomeness. My ovaries are gone the moment he “whips” his hair.

I love him so much I’m already asking my friends to watch The Dark Knight Rises and Premium Rush with me even though they don’t hit the screens until mid-July and late-August, respectively. I cannot wait!

Save for that smart part, I just admitted to myself how sensitive I am. People may label me as brave, strong or rude when I get out of control and I may hurt them with my words, but deep inside, I’m extremely touchy. Words hurt me much more that actions do and this is something I can not handle. Things people say that cut easily make tears fall down from my eyes uncontrollably. Other times my feelings get the better of me and I may exclaim upsetting words to people I care about. Afterwards I regret what I uttered. This is the only time that I grasp what I just expressed and then say my sorry. I don’t know how I got this but I should definitely change it about myself. I’m trying really hard now to think about what I say first before articulating it so I wouldn’t hurt anyone. It’s challenging but I know I will get over this. Hopefully.

10 Cities I Would Love to Visit

I don’t know why but maybe this urge to travel and explore places is rooted in the family. There will never be a summer, a semestral break or a Christmas break without our extended family going out of town or of the country. And I loved the fact that we weren’t always home. That way we miss being home. Plus we learn a lot from our little trips.

Since getting back from Macau, I’ve been thinking of cities I’d die to visit for the years to come with our family. Here they are:

1. Paris, France

This needs no explaining because this is every traveler’s dream! I would love my picture taken at the Eiffel Tower, see the city at night, explore the Louvre Museum and I wouldn’t mind eating snails all day.

2. Rome and Vatican City, Italy

These two almost always go together so I just want to count them as one. If Paris is in every traveler’s list then these two cities I have no doubt is in every believer’s list. Seeing pictures of the St. Peter’s Basilica, the Colosseum and the Arch of Constantine make me gasp every time so this is definitely on the list!

3. Santorini, Greece

I never knew such wonderful place existed until I saw KC and Richard’s movie. For a country with so much history and culture, Santorini will never fail any explorer of the world. Google Santorini and if those pictures don’t take your breathe away, I will shave my eyebrows.

4. Tokyo, Japan

I envy my cousins for having spent their childhoods in Japan. After almost eight years now here in the Philippines, they are still enchanted. And I’m glad that once in while they reminisce their memories with me. And of course, I’d love to see Geishas for real.

5. New York City, USA

It is the most beautiful city in the world… well at least according to Ted Mosby. There is so much to see and experience in this city, from the Skycrapers to the people, the fashion, the food, the lights, the museums, the yellow cabs, everything! And it really blows my mind thinking about how that big chunk of nature manages to fit at the center of this city.

6. London, England

Not just because I’m a die-hard Potterhead, but because this city really is insane. Just the thought of me seeing the entire city through The Eye is astonishing. And of course I’d like to see the changing of guards at the Buckingham Palace, the Big Ben, the Queen and Prince Harry.

7. Anchorage, Alaska

The aurora borealis, enough said.

8. Amsterdam, Netherleands

Although hash brownies are now banned and absinthe is being regulated in Amsterdam, this city made it to the list because of its magnetic charm. These houses along the Amstel River have got to be one of the most astounding views you will ever see.

9. Sydney, Australia

If I would be given the choice to live anywhere abroad for the rest of my life, I will never have second thoughts about moving in to Sydney.

10. Puerto Princesa City, Philippines

Last but not least, our very own, where the now world renowned Subterranean River National Park is. This by far I think is the only place in the list I think I can possibly travel to… At least for now!

I hope to travel to all these places… someday! :)

I wanted to share with you all the wonderful view of the morning sky from a plane (This were the best pictures I can get since I was just using my phone and I was in the middle of the seat row so it was really hard to take pictures plus my seatmate on the window side was really conscious).

It was my first time to board a flight in the morning and I was so stoked to see such a heavenly view! I was ecstatic the whole flight and couldn’t nap because of the view. I even had to stand up to see the window view from the other side.

Though this plane ride marked the end of our trip abroad, it was really nice to be back home! Well minus the weather, of course. Two things I will definitely miss: the cool ambiance and Daddy. :( We’re just praying he’ll be fine there and see him again real soon.

Last night

This by far is the highlight of our third trip to HK and Macau. Since it is Lola Fe’s (My dad’s brother’s mother-in-law) first time here, dad decided to treat us to the Las Vegas Style Buffet at Sands. We were lucky enough to be invited by dad’s contractor, Mr. Tiu, last year to the same eat-all-you-can buffet which means Dad didn’t pay anything. This time, Dad volunteered to pay for it. At first, we didn’t want to go because it’s too pricey but then our stomach’s desire overpowered us.

Before the buffet, I had already planned what food I would fondle on. I didn’t want the same thing to happen last year (I threw up thrice because I didn’t eat anything the whole day). This time, I ate lunch and actually had merienda an hour before.

The buffet starts at 6 p.m. but we arrived forty-five minutes later because we had to wait for dad (he goes out from work at 6).

It was raining really hard and was chilly outside that Dad decided to postpone the dinner. Pero mapilit kami eh! :)

Kind of pricey but definitely worth it.

First up, soup! Syempre stomach warm-up muna (Last time, the first thing I ate were meat and steak). There are a variety of soup but I chose pumpkin soup kasi favorite ko yan sa Meat Plus.

Then I made my own salad. Mixed lettuce, crouton, corn, bacon bits, pickles, green olives and Caesar’s dressing.

The good thing about this buffet is that there is a different section for different cuisines. Hiwa-hiwalay yung Japanese, Thai, Korean, Chinese, seafood, salads, smoked meat, steaks, cakes, sweets and ice cream. What I really liked about it is that you can make your own salad from a wide range of ingredients and dressings. And everything is guaranteed fresh because you can actually see the Chefs do their own thing in their see-through glass kitchens. The restaurant had a very good ambiance: dim lights, comfortable tables, clean bathrooms, accommodating staff and excellent service. There is always a person waiting behind your table to get your plate every time you stand up to get another set of food. So for sure every time you sit, your place is clean again.

Seafood naman! This was actually my first time to eat snails… and they were really good! Last year, I didn’t eat seafood ‘cause I didn’t like the idea that they were on ice. Laging mainit kasi itong sineserve sa P’nas. Despite this, they were all superb.

Smoked Hams and Fish. They were all tasty but I especially like the tuna salad, smoked salmon, and roasted beef.

Salads. (From middle top to right: Squid salad, Portuguese ham salad, cheese salad, pumpkin salad and beef salad) ‘Di ko na kinuha lahat ng salad kasi nahihiya ako sa Chef na nasa harap ko. Hahaha. Favorite ko yung beef salad pero I wasn’t able to finish the entire plate, pumpkin salad and cheese salad didn’t appeal to me.

Before digging into the Jap section, I had tea with milk. I was so full I needed something digest the food faster. After this, I went to the bathroom to contemplate on life… HAHAHA

Sushi time! Just took a piece of each sushi that looked cute and of course my favorite California maki. The salad and the sushi with fried beef were really good! I was so full I didn’t eat everything kahit na sobrang sarap talaga nila.

Then I went to the meat section. Since I’ve already tasted the steaks last year, I just took the things I’m not familiar with. Of course I had to get duck and fried noodles. :)

After eating meat, I ordered tea again and went to the bathroom… to look in the mirror. :)

This is me with my I-am-so-full-I-can-hardly-smile face. So much sweets I only took the cute looking ones. I also did not take the one’s with fruits I didn’t like e.g. pineapple. I felt so sad giving this to the waiter kasi sayang. Pero ‘di ko na talaga kinayang ubusin. I only took tiny bits of each except the wasabi mousse cake which was a delight.

The ice cream setup. Macarons, assorted biscuits and marshmallows in the tall glass jars, ice cream sauce and toppings on the small glasses, cones, glasses and the ice creams in the freezer.

I wasn’t able to eat my fave Tiramisu and H-D ice cream because I was really full and I cannot stand or sit straight so I just took photos of the cute setups.

We only took a few photos after eating because it was really hard to smile, sit or stand up straight when you’re that full. Although I wasn’t able to eat Tiramisu or grab ice cream, I was ecstatic to be able to experience this wonderful dinner buffet for the second time around. (Plus, I’m glad I didn’t vomit this time.) I really do hope a third time’s just around the corner. :)
